Expedition vs Expedition MAX

2025 Ford Expedition vs Expedition MAX: Full-Size SUV Comparison
For 2025, Ford's Expedition is a three-row full-size SUV. The standard Expedition is about 209.9 inches long (84.6 inches wide). The Expedition MAX stretches that to 221.7 inches, giving noticeably more interior space. Both versions can be outfitted to seat seven or eight passengers, making them great for large families or group travel.
Both share Ford's twin-turbo 3.5L V6 engine lineup, tuned to 400 hp (480 lb-ft) in most trims and 440 hp (510 lb-ft) in high-output variants (such as the Tremor). Four-wheel drive is optional on the base Active and standard elsewhere. The standard 4x4 Expedition can tow up to 9,600 lbs, whereas the longer MAX (being heavier) is rated to 9,000 lbs (4x4). However, the MAX's extra length pays off in cargo volume: it offers 123.1 cu. ft. behind the front seats versus 108.5 cu. ft. in the regular Expedition.

Performance and Capability
All 2025 Expeditions use a twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Most trims produce 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, while the Tremor (and Platinum with performance packages) boosts output to 440 hp and 510 lb-ft. A smooth 10-speed automatic transmission is standard. Four-wheel drive (with selectable terrain modes) is optional on the Active trim and standard on higher trims, giving the Expedition confident grip on varied roads. These powertrain features help the full-size SUV accelerate impressively for its class.
The Expedition's rugged chassis supports heavy-duty tasks. Available stability systems include trailer-sway control and, with the Heavy-Duty Tow Package, an integrated trailer-brake controller. When properly equipped, the standard Expedition 4x4 can tow up to 9,600 lbs, while the MAX tops out at 9,000 lbs (4x4) or 6,300 lbs (4x2). The off-road Tremor model further enhances capability: it adds a 1-inch suspension lift, all-terrain tires on 18″ wheels, locking rear differential, underbody skid plates and front tow hooks, along with the high-output V6. Together, these features make the Expedition highly capable for towing, hauling and rugged use.
Trim Levels and Customization
The 2025 Expedition offers four main trims: Active (base), Platinum (luxury), Tremor (off-road) and King Ranch (premium). The Active trim provides essentials like 18″ alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a hands-free power liftgate and an eight-passenger cabin. Moving up to Platinum adds luxury amenities: leather-trimmed seats, power-deployable running boards, ventilated front seats, a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system and other refinements. Both the regular and MAX wheelbases are available across all trims, and Ford offers a variety of option packages (driver's package, appearance package, etc.) to tailor each model's features (for example, adding 22″ or 24″ wheels, ambient lighting, or advanced towing tech).
The Tremor off-road trim swaps some Platinum comforts for rugged hardware. It drops the running boards but includes the 440-hp engine, a lifted suspension, 18″ wheels with all-terrain tires, locking rear axle and skid plates, plus unique exterior trim. King Ranch sits at the top, building on Platinum with exclusive style cues: 22″ bronze wheels, special brown leather with King Ranch badging, adaptive dampers for a smoother ride and bronze exterior accents. In short, buyers can pick a trim focused on value, luxury or off-road performance and then customize it with packages to get the exact Ford Expedition features they want.

Interior Comfort and Technology
The Expedition's cabin is spacious and well-appointed. All models offer three rows and seat seven or eight adults. Premium trims feature leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated front seats. Many configurations include second-row captain's chairs and a power-folding third row, while higher trims add convenient touches like a power-adjustable steering column, wireless charging and massaging driver's seat. The overall feel is upscale, with plenty of head- and legroom in every row and thoughtful storage like numerous cupholders and USB ports.
Technology is a strong suit. 2025 Expeditions debut Ford's new "Digital Experience" cockpit: a panoramic 24″ digital instrument panel paired with a 13.2″ center touchscreen. The SYNC infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and even provides a built-in 5G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot via FordPass Connect. Top-of-line trims can be equipped with an available 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and extra USB-C ports. In short, Ford Expedition features keep the driver and passengers connected, informed and entertained on the road.
Versatility and Uses
The Expedition is designed for real-world versatility. For example, the available Cargo Tailgate Manager (shown above) turns the split tailgate into a handy shelf or bench, supporting up to 35 lbs. Ford's innovative split upper/lower tailgate and plentiful storage bins make loading gear easier. Combined with robust roof rails and optional 360-degree zone lighting, these features let families pack and access camping equipment or tailgate party supplies in comfort.
Meanwhile, the Expedition excels at towing and hauling. Its 4x4 models tow up to 9,600 lbs (standard) or 9,000 lbs (MAX) - enough for large trailers or boats. Folding all seats flat opens up a vast cargo hold: the standard Expedition offers 108.5 cu ft behind the first row, and the MAX expands that to 123.1 cu ft. Even with all three rows upright, you still get 22.9 cu ft of space (37.4 cu ft in the MAX) behind the back row, sufficient for several carry-on suitcases or bulky gear. In practice, the Expedition's combination of towing capacity and cargo space makes it a go-anywhere, do-anything full-size SUV for families, adventurers and professionals alike.
